MEDIA NEWS: National Gallery of Art Acquires Kerry James Marshall "Great America" Painting

Kerry James Marshall, Great America, 1994, acrylic and collage on canvas
National Gallery of Art, Washington, Gift of the Collectors Committee, 2011

WASHINGTON, D.C. -  The Collectors Committee of the National Gallery of Art recently made possible the acquisition of Great America (1994) by Kerry James Marshall (b. 1955)?the Gallerys first painting by the mid-career African American artist. The work will be on view beginning May 1 in the East Building's Concourse galleries.

"This year, the Collectors Committee's brought the Gallery a powerful painting by Kerry James Marshall," said Earl A. Powell III, director, National Gallery of Art. "We are very grateful to the Collectors Committee, which enables the Gallery to continually enhance its holdings of contemporary art."

A devoted student of the human figure and the history of art, especially the genres of portraiture and narrative, Marshall draws upon the experience of African Americans like himself to create imposing, contemporary history paintings.

Marshall's mature career can be dated to 1980, when, inspired by the opening lines of Ralph Ellison's Invisible Man, he developed his signature motif of a dark, near-silhouetted figure in A Portrait of the Artist as His Former Self. Refusing both negative and positive stereotypes of black people, Marshall's figures of "extreme blackness" operate, he explains, "right on the borderline," forcing the viewer to find nuance and articulation within only apparently black forms. This strategy has been influential for younger artists, including Kara Walker and Glenn Ligon.

Great America is contemporaneous with Marshall's well-known Garden Project (1994-1995), a series of paintings based on housing projects with "gardens" in their names, such as Nickerson Gardens in Watts, where he grew up. In those works, Marshall sought to convey the dignity and complexity of lives set within difficult circumstances. In this work, he re-imagines a boat ride into the haunted tunnel of an amusement park as the Middle Passage of slaves from Africa to the New World. What might in other hands be a work of heavy political irony becomes instead a delicate interweaving of the histories of painting and race. The  painting, which is stretched directly onto the wall, creates a screen or backdrop onto which viewers project their own associations triggered by the diaphanous yet powerful imagery.

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1955, Kerry James Marshall grew up in Los Angeles and graduated from Otis Art Institute. After spending time as a fellow at the Studio Museum in Harlem, he moved to Chicago in 1987, where he still lives and works.

THEASTER GATES
An Epitaph for Civil Rights And Other Domesticated Structures

On May 3, 1963, Commissioner for Public Safety, Bull Connor, ordered the police and fire departments of Birmingham, Alabama to haze demonstrators who participated in the Southern Christian Leadership Councils Birmingham campaign. Those potent images are always with me through relatives and friends who were there and others who have publicly remembered this moment in American history. The articulated needs of the Black poor and marginalized rallied thousands from around the country and the entire world turned to this catalytic moment. For days, fire hoses and canines were used to intimidate demonstrators. People from all over the country wanted to fight for the needs of Americas wrongly served. This event led to immediate shifts in the American South and created opportunity for Black people to integrate. Affirmative action grew; we could shit from the same toilet, we could begin to live where we wanted and demand a higher wage. The student sit-ins and peaceful protests were transformative for all of this country. Some of us are slightly better while others are a great deal better, but over the last six decades, things are still far from equal.

The question then is one of political potency. How do we think of the history of Black political engagement that required acts of unrestrained heroism and life-threatening engagement? What is the state of Civil Rights, especially now that there are splinters of class-based need, new marginalized groups, and the ever present belief that things are better for all because of the election of 2008?

An Epitaph for Civil Rights and Other Domesticated Structures (2011) offers a descent into my mourning. It is a chance to acknowledge the potent symbols of democracy and degradation and also ask the question, Is our political structure as tidy as the fine China that we use to serve or the galvanized, sterile appliances that civil rights has given us access to? My descent implicates me as an aesthete who seeks a glorious retelling of the most important American narrative shy of the Slave Trade. I offer the materials of the Black South Side or the forgotten city as an Epitaph for Civil Rights, in hopes of a historical and political redemption; redemption, even for me.

PRETORIA, South Africa A South African photographer is being honored for helping expose apartheid's brutality to the world with a picture that ended his career.
On Wednesday, celebrated as Freedom Day in South Africa because it is the anniversary of the country's first all-race elections, President Jacob Zuma will bestow national honors on Sam Nzima for a photograph reminiscent of the "Pieta" he took showing a dying Hector Pieterson, a 13-year-old shot by police during the June 16, 1976 Soweto uprising.
Nzima is receiving the Order of Ikhamanga, which recognizes South Africans who excel in arts, culture, literature, music, journalism and sport. He joins such past winners as jazz legend Hugh Masekela and novelist Alan Paton.
Nzima said in an interview Wednesday his photograph seen around the world "tells the story of what happened. You don't even need a caption to see that something terrible has happened."
Nzima, 75, said police were so enraged by the attention his photograph drew, he feared they would kill him. He left Johannesburg and his newspaper to become a businessman in a small eastern South African town.
But his photograph continued to draw attention. Nzima has spoken to students at a German high school named for Pieterson, and attended exhibitions that included his photograph in the United States, Briton and the Netherlands. Later this year, he will go to Belgium.
Pieterson was the first to die from police gunfire after Soweto students were ordered to disperse. The students were protesting an order that black students to be taught in Afrikaans, the language of the white-minority rulers.
Hundreds of blacks, many of them young people, were killed in ensuing clashes nationwide. Conflict escalated in the 1980s and finally led to apartheid's demise in the early 1990s.
Nzima said he arrived in Soweto early that morning in 1976, assigned to cover what he thought would be peaceful protests. He watched students paint signs.
"One said, "Afrikaans must be abolished.' Another, `We are being fed the crumbs of education,'" Nzima recalled.
The marchers were confronted by a white police officer who told them he would shoot if they did not disperse, Nzima said. Instead, Nzima said, they began singing, "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika," or "God Bless Africa."
"That song, which is the national anthem today, was banned then," Nzima said.
The police began shooting, and Nzima saw a boy fall. A tall boy picked him and began to run. Nzima took six pictures as the boy was taken to the nearest car, driven by a colleague from his newspaper, and taken to a clinic. There, he was pronounced dead and identified as Pieterson.
Nzima, working at a time when restrictions on reporting on conflict were draconian, removed the film and hid it in his sock. Later, police forced him to expose film in his camera, but the photos of Pieterson were safe.
"A lot of people ask me, why didn't I help Hector Pieterson?" Nzima said. "It was not my duty. A journalist must do his job. My job is to take pictures."
And this picture, he said, made a difference.
"This picture was an eye-opener for the whole world."

Crystal Coast Blue Marlin

Fishing for Blue Marlin off the Crystal Coast
North Carolinas Crystal Coast is home to the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and in June the intensity will be at its highest when it is decided who takes home the grand Big Rock prize.
Ever since the first big catch of marlin in 1957, fishermen have flocked to North Carolinas coastal waters to see if they too could catch big game. The 53rd annual fishing tournament kicks off on June 10 to 18 in Morehead City. Fishermen from all over the country join in on the tournament in hopes of winning big.
The tournament offers a variety of festivities including a captains party, sponsored dinners, an awards banquet with an auction and a lady angler event. Prizes for the competition vary with each level as the opportunities to win increase. Daily release prizes include $5,300 for the 53rd billfish release during the tournament and $2,000 each day for the first billfish released that day.
The Big Rock Tournament has provided more than $1million to winners for the past 13 years and the competition continues to grow each year. With all this prize money, the board still finds a way to give back. Supporting numerous charities, they have donated more than $2,300,000.
The gems of the Crystal Coast include Atlantic Beach, Beaufort, Emerald Isle, Harkers Island and Morehead City. Dangling like a delicate strand of pearls off the coast of North Carolina, the favored Atlantic beach destination represents one of the only remaining natural barrier island systems in the world.

NEW YORK: Kara Walker / Dust Jackets for the Niggerati- and Supporting Dissertations, Drawings submitted ruefully by Dr. Kara E. Walker / Siekkma Jenkins & Co. / April 21 - June 4, 2011

Kara Walker, The Great Negro Heroine, 2011, Graphite on paper, 22.5 x 30 inches, 57.2 x 76.2 cm
Image via http://www.sikkemajenkinsco.com/
Sikkema Jenkins & Co. and Lehmann Maupin Gallery are pleased to present joint exhibitions of new works by Kara Walker on view at both galleries from April 21 through June 4, 2011.

The exhibition at Sikkema Jenkins & Co., Dust Jackets for the Niggerati-and Supporting Dissertations, Drawings submitted ruefully by Dr. Kara E. Walker, will feature new graphite drawings and hand-printed texts on paper. This body of work grew out of the artists search for understanding of the way that power asserts itself in interpersonal and geopolitical spheres. As she embarked on this quest the figural elements began to disappear from her work. Now, they emerge again in what Walker describes as a giddy embrace of the figural and the narrative.

The works explore themes of transition and migration that run throughout the African American experience in the 20th century. There is a cycle of destruction and renewal that is embodied in the move from country to city, as well as the destruction of an old Black identity and the emergence of a New Negro identity. Thinking metaphorically about this move from rural to urban environment, the works can be read almost as a comic book or storyboard. There is a narrative present -both explicit and implied about the constant fluctuation of identity.

Kara Walker, Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipi's Blue Tale (Video Still), 2011, single channel video, dimensions variable. Edition of 3. Image via http://www.lehmannmaupin.com/#/exhibitions/2011-04-21_kara-walker/
In the concurrent exhibition, Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipis Blue Tale, Lehmann Maupin Gallery at 201 Chrystie Street will present three new video works which draw on Walkers own experience in the Mississippi Delta, a region mythologized in song and popular culture but tragically depressing. She explains, I drove down to the Delta thinking about the terrors of Jim Crow and slavery, yet the silent indifference of the landscape and the economic stasis, lack of mobility, and the persistence of a racist memory in the area was what stuck.

The title video, Fall Frum Grace, Miss Pipis Blue Tale, is a shadow puppet narrative which follows the travails of the heroine, Miss Pipi, intercut with abstracts of a surreal and violent nature. The subtext of the video is the mythology surrounding white Southern womanhood, historically cited time and time again as an entity to be protected from sexuality, in particular from the presumed hypersexuality of black men. Although fiction, this was the excuse for the murder of countless black men and boys in Jim Crow America. Miss Pipis Blue Tale is meant to be as deeply contradictory a visual tale as the Blues is in music. Delta Blues, often merges broad comedy with despair, sensuality with loss and do-it-yourself urgency with structured improvisation.

The exhibitions musical theme is revisited in the short video loop, Bad Blues. Featuring the artist and shot while traveling in Mississippi, the video is a comic sketch about black female agency and having The Blues. Another video, titled Levee, is a quiet meditation on the landscape set at sunrise in Friars Point, Mississippi. The straight line that bisects the image is the top edge of a section of levee, shot from below, at the edge of the Mississippi River. It is a black space, a barrier and engineering feat that receives little attention until failures occur such as the 1927 levee break at Greenville, Mississippi or more recently those caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Kara Walker was born in 1969 in Stockton, California and currently lives and works in New York. Walker is known for her candid investigation of race, gender, sexuality, and violence through silhouetted figures, which have appeared in numerous exhibitions worldwide. The artists recent solo exhibitions include The Black Road at CAC Malaga, Spain; Kara Walker at the Met: After the Deluge at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; and Kara Walker: My Complement, My Enemy, My Oppressor, My Love, which premiered at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis and traveled to the Whitney Museum and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Walker is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships such as the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Achievement Award, the Deutsche Bank Prize, and the Larry Aldrich Award.

Works by Walker can be found in prestigious collections around the globe including the Art Institute of Chicago; the Baltimore Museum of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington D.C.; the Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Tate Gallery, London; and the Rubell Family Collection, Miami.

ATLANTA: Daniel Minter / "A Heavy Grace, A Shallow Home" / Hammonds House Museum / April 24 - June 26, 2011

Daniel Minter's art is an art of reclamation. His images -- in painting, in sculpture -- call back the beauty of our darkest skins, the plush of our lips, the fullness of our sight. It is an art of close attention. Almost hyper-real. A realism edged forward to its most essential characteristic -- spirit. Wide oval eyes ever-watchful from all the realms. This is mystery speaking a plain language. Here spirit and flesh combine on canvas, in wood, in iron and bronze. Minter's figures are both history and myth. His bodies, big-boned and full-labored, have an uncommon delicacy and a heavy grace. Minter's art is a protective art. And an art of protection. Firm lines. Crossed roads. Boxes. Square things. And the open circles of offering.

As part of Hammonds House Museum's continued commitment to the cultivation of emerging artists the Art Auction Merit Award exhibition features an artist selected from the Museum's annual Art Auction. Daniel Minter's art was chosen by a trio of museum professionals based in the Atlanta, GA arts community.

NEW YORK: Radcliffe Bailey / "Outer Spaceways" / Jack Shainman Gallery / April 21 - May 21, 2011

RADCLIFFE BAILEY / OUTER SPACEWAYS / APRIL 21 - MAY 21, 2011

Jack Shainman Gallery is pleased to announce Outer Spaceways, a solo exhibition of new works by Radcliffe Bailey. The show includes sculpture, paintings, steel and glass wall-bound pieces, and works on paper. These various elements are strong on their own while working together to create an immersive environment that approaches one cohesive installation.

Bailey invokes jazz composer, musician, poet and philosopher Sun Ra as an orbital perturbation to his ongoing and ever changing set of interests and focal points. In doing this, Bailey explores a trajectory anchored in ancestral themes and objects that continues on through time and space. Sun Ras ability to pull from entire histories of musical sounds and genres, while simultaneously occupying a space in the future characterized by his philosophy of interplanetary travel, mirrors Baileys continuous reexamination of ideas relating to journey and movement. Returning to work primarily with steel, glass and wood, the physical process of making the work serve as performative reenactments of craft and familial traditions.

In Cerebral Cavern, Bailey revisits the cabinet, a consistent trope throughout his work referencing a material space imbued with associations of searching for that which heals - be it food, medicine, or something less tangible. Resting on each shelf are groupings of identical plaster heads that become anonymous in their repetition. Inspired by recent global movements sweeping entire geopolitical regions, the work is to be read from the bottom up. Beginning at its base level, the heads whisper to one another. As the work builds upward, their density increases and ultimately the accumulated heads begin to look outward. Continuing this theme of movement and progression, Bailey uses records, circular planetary forms and musical instruments, including the lid of a baby grand piano, to recreate a solar system of ideas and sounds in Other Worlds Worlds.

A solo traveling exhibition of his work, Memory as Medicine, will open at the High Museum of Art, Atlanta on June 28th, 2011 then travel to the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio, TX. His past exhibitions include, New/Now: Radcliffe Bailey, New Britain Museum of American Art, New Britain, CT, 2004, Neo-HooDoo, organized by The Menil Collection, Houston, TX, at Miami Art Museum, Miami, FL, 2009, and traveled to MoMA P.S.1, Long Island City, NY, 2009. Bailey's work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; The Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City, MO and the High Museum of Art, Atlanta, GA, among others. This will be Baileys fifth solo show at the gallery.

The monograph Radcliffe Bailey: Memory as Medicine by Carol Thompson (with contributions by Rene Paul Barilleaux, Manthia Diawara, Michael Rooks and Edward S. Spriggs) will be available in mid-May. The book offers the first mid-career survey of work by the emerging artist.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm. For additional information and photographic material please contact the gallery at info@jackshainman.com.

Pets in Annapolis

Ranked the 13th most dog-friendly city in the nation, Annapolis (& Anne Arundel County) has invited all pet lovers to Bring Your Pets to Play there during National Tourism Week May 7 to 15.
Recognizing the fact that 49-percent of U.S. adult leisure travelers consider pets to be a part of the family, and 18-percent of this same group usually take their pets with them when they travel, the Annapolis & Anne Arundel County Conference and Visitors Bureau (AAACCVB) will help to make traveling with four-legged friends in tow more enjoyable than ever during National Tourism Week.
AAACCVB President and CEO Connie Del Signore says it is fitting that Annapolis roll out the red carpet for its four-legged friends during National Tourism Week. We welcome pets to Annapolis and the Chesapeake Bay, and well be spreading the word in a special way with events, contests, giveaways, and activities that thank pet owners for choosing our destination.
The AAACCVB will be celebrating resident and visiting furry friends throughout the month of May.
Throughout National Tourism Week, pet owners are invited to stop by the AAACCVBs 26 West Street Visitors Center to pick up doggy treats provided compliments of Paws Pet Boutique and bandanas sponsored by Peppers.

FIVE: Deborah Willis, PhD

FIVE is a special feature at BlackArtistNews where five questions are posed to an individual artist, curator, gallerist, collector or art lover. Why five questions? Well, there are five fingers on each hand and artists create with their hands hence one, two, three, four, FIVE.

Earlier this month, art photographer Deborah Willis gathered a whos who of black visual artists and intellectuals for Beauty and Fashion: The Black Portrait Symposium at New York University where she serves as chair and professor of NYUs Tisch School of the Arts, Department of Photography and Imaging. As a curator and photo historian she has unearthed photographic treasures that reveal valuable insight to the day-to-day aspects of African American life -- many of which can be seen in the numerous books and monographs under her name. BlackArtistNews witnessed the multi-hyphenated Willis in multi-task mode when after giving a lecture at the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago she simultaneously autographed books, smiled for photos, fielded questions from admirers, confabbed with colleagues and answered "FIVE":

Artistically, what are you working on right now?

As an artist, Im working on family photographs. Im photographing family members as well as pregnant women. Im interested in stories that pregnant women are told about life. Im trying to tell stories about life and how it extends through words and images in that way.

Taking into consideration your work as a curator, photo historian and scholar how do you find the time to make art?

Um, I just make the time. I really make the time because its so important to continue. Our stories need to be told and so thats really important for me to continue in that way. Yeah.

What was the one image you created that after you saw it you thought to yourself Im an artist?

Lets see. (Pauses.) Probably a picture I made of my grandfather in [a] hospital bed. [It's] a really beautiful image of him kind of posing and [trying to look] dignified even though he was dying. I was an art student then.

What year was the photo taken?

1973.

Singer Diana Ross was a recent guest on the Oprah Winfrey Show. Shes personified beauty and glamour since the 1960s. Is there a reason why theres no image of her in your book Posing Beauty?

No, no. Theres no reason. Shes in Let Your Motto Be Resistance. So yeah, look in that [book]. Shes posed [with the Supremes.]

Does art matter?

Yes. Art is what makes all of us survive and keep us hopeful. Thats why I teach art and thats why I believe [it] matters. Yes, um hum. (Shakes her head up and down.)

Napa Valley Vineyard to Vintner

Napas Vineyard to Vintner Party
Join the Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association at its annual neighborhood block party Vineyard to Vintner (V2V 2011).
V2V 2011 promises to be both more festive and more informative, as it has been extended to encompass the entire last weekend of April. The party begins with four intimate vintner-hosted Friday Night Dinners on April 29, followed on Saturday morning with Style and Strength: A Stags Leap District Cabernet Seminar hosted by Saveur Magazines wine editor David Rosengarten, continuing on to exclusive Winery Open Houses at 18 Stags Leap District properties. On Sunday participants welcome guests back for one last bit of complimentary tasting.

The four Friday night dinners will be the most intimate and, perhaps for some, the most memorable part of the weekend. Each dinner will be held at a separate Stags Leap District winery, with cuisine provided by a top chef, and limited space allowing only 45 guests each.
During the winery open houses on Saturday April 30, guests can experience the 18 beautiful properties located within the appellation at V2Vs Open Houses, enjoying personal access to vintners and winemakers as they showcase their caves, barrels and cellars for special tours and tastings unavailable to the public.
On Sunday May 1, guests will have an opportunity to enjoy a series of bonus complimentary tastings at participating retail rooms.

The Stags Leap District Winegrowers Association is a non-profit association of neighboring vintners and growers who work together to grow the reputation of their wines and appellation, and share the appellations quality with the wine loving world.

HOUSTON: Jamal Cyrus / "DKONKR" / Bryan Miller Gallery / April 16 - May 14, 2011

Jamal Cyrus. Digitally altered AP image of Egyptian protest scene, 2011.
Bryan Miller Gallery is pleased to present DKONKR, a solo exhibition of new work by Jamal Cyrus.

Rather than being an exhibition of discrete, contained works, DKONKR is more like an elaborately prepared puzzle with clues to the artist's intent spanning eras and epochs. From Egypt's first dynasty to early American slave culture and on to the civil rights era and modern Egypt, Cyrus masterfully finesses the societal and spiritual implications of materials, techniques and images. Placed in relation to one another, these elements suggest intriguing trans-dimensional and supra-historical narratives and connections.

In one series of new works, Cyrus visits the advanced technology of laser cutting upon the ancient material of papyrus. The result is beautiful and delicate, but also powerful in its suggestiveness. This readily available 21st century technique would have struck fear in the hearts of the Pharaohs. By inscribing papyrus with an intensely focused beam of light, Cyrus suggests the searing finger of God, though instead of a divine revelation, the content is a redacted, declassified FBI document from the US government's shadowing of the Black Panther Party in the 1960's.

In another work, an image of a ransacked Black Panther meeting quarters is dotted with catalog numbers extracted from an image King Tut's tomb. By equating a violent FBI raid with the more organized and systematic raid of a divine leader's final resting place, Cyrus illuminates the effect of time and ever-shifting power on the sacred. As one power conquers another, and after enough time passes, sacrilege eventually becomes science.

At any moment in human history, there is always the Conqueror and the Conquered. In both ancient Egypt and colonial America it was brutally clear who the conqueror was. In the early Americas, there was a notable African man who was enslaved and who, despite his circumstance, refused to let his spirit be broken. Through trickery and cunning he eventually evaded his masters, becoming an important and inspirational figure in African American folklore. He became known as John the Conqueror, phoneticized by Cyrus as DKONKR.

In addition to an art exhibition, there is also a medicinal root named after John the Conqueror. It is the root of the Ipomoea plant species, several of which will be included in the exhibition. High John the Conqueror Root has a strong history of use in folk magic. It is an essential ingredient in mojo bags and sexual spells, possibly gaining it's reputation as a libido enhancer because when dried, it resembles the scrotum of a dark skinned man.

Jamal Cyrus is represented by Bryan Miller Gallery, Houston. His exhibitions include "Whitney Biennial 2006: Day for Night", Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY, "Winners Have Yet to be Announced", The Kitchen, New York, NY, "Huckleberry Finn", CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco, CA & "International Artist in Residence, New Works: 10.2", Artpace, San Antonio. Cyrus received his MFA from The University of Pennsylvania in 2008. He lives and works in Houston, TX.
